Behind the Gates: Opening Day at Floriade 2025
This year, we had the rare chance to step behind the scenes at Floriade on the morning before its public opening, and to stand at the gates as the very first visitors of 2025 streamed in. There was something truly special about witnessing those first moments, an instant rush of energy as the crowd poured through, setting the tone for the festival. With sunshine, clear skies and spring blooms on full display, Canberra’s weather did not disappoint and within minutes Floriade was alive with people.

Canberra is always beautiful in September, but during Floriade it truly shines. The city comes alive with colour, energy, and thousands of blossoms that transform Canberra into one of the most picturesque destinations in Australia. Spring in the nation’s capital has to be experienced to be believed.
One of the highlights of opening day was meeting Tim Howard, Floriade’s head gardener, who shared his advice for those planning to take part in The Great Big Bulb Dig. His top tip? Bring along a garden claw rather than a spade! It lets you get to the bulbs more easily and avoids pulling up too much soil. Still, Tim added, the soil itself is top quality, so you might not mind bringing a little of it home, too!
Bagging a Piece of Floriade
After soaking up the floral sights, the first stop for many visitors was the Information Tent and Floriade Shop. The item everyone was after: the official Great Big Bulb Dig bag. We joined the queue and were third in line, and every single person ahead of us bought one. At just $20, they’re a generous size and, most importantly, they’re your ticket into The Great Big Bulb Dig on Monday 13 October, the day after Floriade’s closing.

It was clear straight away that the bags are more than just a souvenir. They’re about securing the chance to take home a little piece of the Floriade magic – bulbs that once made up the displays will brighten local gardens across the region next spring. Even better, all profits from the sale of the bags go to our YHomes Housing Development, proudly selected by Floriade’s presenting partner, Allhomes.

Taking Floriade Home
The Great Big Bulb Dig is more than just a chance to dig up flowers; it’s about continuing the story of Floriade. Attendees will head home with bulbs that, with some care, will bloom again in 2026, keeping the spirit of the festival alive while supporting safe housing for women who are victim-survivors of domestic violence, as well as those facing housing insecurity or homelessness due to economic hardship, age-related vulnerabilities, or systemic disadvantage.
The gates may have only just opened, but already Floriade 2025 is setting the tone for a season of colour, community, and celebration. From behind-the-scenes moments to the joy of carrying a Great Big Bulb Bag, it’s shaping up to be another unforgettable year.
