Reclaiming the Lanyon Youth Centre!

During the winter school holiday program, we embarked on an exciting project to transform the Lanyon Youth Centre. Along with Ciara, who is our Senior Youth Engagement Officer, we thought it was important to give the ownership of the space to the young people, and we made sure that the young people were heavily involved in the brainstorming process. Over three long days, the youth centre was gutted of all the old furniture, cleaned, prepped, and then brought back to life.

We decided that the colour scheme needed to be changed, more room needed to be created, the clutter needed to be removed, and the whole space needed to be more modern. Our main focus was to make the space feel like a home; comfy, calm, and warm.

A blue and purple colour scheme was chosen, and excess tables and chairs were removed. All the old clutter was replaced with new interior furnishings, and the roof was covered with greenery and fairy lights. The walls were decorated with paintings, photo frames, and inspirational quotes. We focused on zoning different areas, to support easy access to information and resources, and promote positive vibes.

The young people also took charge of decorating the six cupboard doors within the space. The youth workers taped out geometric shapes and the young people were free to spray paint their favourite designs. This project will continue to evolve as the young people develop new ideas for the youth centre.

Another great new addition is the ‘Your Youth Team’ wall. On this wall is a photo and profile of the staff at the Lanyon Youth Centre to help create a safe, familiar and connected space.lanyon 1

The youth team is very excited about the makeover and we’re looking forward to surprising the regulars when they return in the new school term.
