22 May 2013

The YWCA of Canberra in collaboration with the ACT Government have announced the two recipients of $5,000 scholarships for the 2013 She Leads – Diploma of Management.

The scholarships were awarded to Mary Lee and Arika Errington.

She Leads is a Diploma of Management especially designed to develop young women’s skills to break through the barriers they face in the early stages of their careers and support them to achieve their leadership potential.

The YWCA of Canberra is uniquely placed to provide this rare opportunity to young women. She Leads draws on the organisation’s eighty years of experience fostering young women’s leadership, and in its ability to offer a nationally recognised qualification through its RTO (Recognised Training Organisation) status.

“Young women at the start of their careers will greatly benefit from this unique opportunity to boost their personal and professional development.” Said Ms Burch, ACT Minister for Women.

Scholarship recipient Mary Lee, a young culturally and linguistically diverse woman, is the Training Coordinator for Lifeline’s National Domestic Violence Response Training (DV-alert).

Mary said participating in this course will assist her to understand her leadership style and enhance her skills to mentor other young women in the future.

Arika Errington, a young Wakka Wakka woman from Queensland, said receiving this scholarship will help her build a strong foundation to further her goal of becoming a manager.

Arika mentioned She Leads was particularly interesting for her as the program offered the opportunity to learn from the experiences of accomplished women leaders. Arika is the Project Coordinator for the Talking About the Smokes Project for the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organization.

“The quality of applications demonstrated the interest of the community in gender responsive leadership programs such as She Leads” said Rebecca Vassarotti, Executive Director of the YWCA of Canberra.
