YWCA Canberra is hosting our seventh annual prom for LGBTQIA+ young people across Canberra and their allies.

Prom is one of our most popular events, and for good reason! We have lots planned to make it a night to remember. This year, the theme is ‘Up in the Stars’, taking inspiration from glitter, galaxies, star-signs and sci-fi.

Come along for a fun and safe night where you can express your identity and be your authentic self in a judgement-free, inclusive environment. There will be a delicious buffet-style dinner, a drag performance by Phish and Phreak, and loads more!

To ensure this event is completely free and accessible for young people, we are asking the community to help us by sponsoring a ticket!

The LGBTQIA+ & Allies Prom is an opportunity for young people aged 12 to 25 to experience a formal-style event and express their identity in a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental environment.

Last year, through the incredible generosity of our community, we were able to ensure that all young people were able to attend the prom free of charge. We want to do this again!

You can sponsor a young person to attend Prom by selecting “I want to sponsor a ticket for a young person to have the night of their life” and making a donation.

LGBTQIA+ and Allies Prom 2023 Awards

Every year, the LGBTQIA+ and Allies Prom has awards for outstanding members of the LGBTQIA+ Community who are attending Prom.

This year’s awards are:

A Creative Contributions Award (coverings, art music, drama, and any other creative skills)

This award is for an individual who has demonstrated outstanding creativity in elevating the experiences, narratives, and expressions of the LGBTQIA+ Community. This may include but is not limited to innovative decoration, original performances, or thought-provoking art pieces that encapsulate the essence of the LGBTQIA+ experience, culture or history

Resilience Award

This award is a testament to an individual fortitude and determination in overcoming adversity. The recipient of this honor has demonstrated unwavering resilience, navigating the unique challenges that come with identifying as LGBTQIA+ while preserving a strong identity and being their authentic self. This award is a recognition of those who have turned obstacles into opportunities, inspiring others with their courage, strength, and unwavering pride.

Community Contributions Award

This award is a testament to an individual who has gone above and beyond to nurture and support a cause that they are passionate about. This may have taken many forms such as volunteering efforts, organization, advocacy, or providing a supportive environment for their peers. The award recognizes those who have devoted time, energy, and passion to ensure that their cause is seen, heard, and celebrated.

To nominate someone for an award, please get their permission for the nomination and email mahri.henderson@ywca-canberra.org.au with the following information:

• The young persons preferred name
• Age
• What award you are nominating them for
• A short description of why you think they should receive the award.

The nominations will be reviewed and decided on by the Prom Committee, awards will be given out at Prom.
