Have you ever wondered what a typical day at YWCA Canberra is like? Perhaps you’re interested in knowing a little bit more about our programs and what services we can provide.

With no two days the same, it might be easier to ask what we DON’T do!

From running our She Leads programs, our community centre and even our housing support services there’s no shortage of opportunities to explore when you work at YWCA Canberra.

Curious to find out more? Today we’re sharing with you five things you might not have known about YWCA Canberra.

1. We’re a dedicated community service provider

Community is at the heart of what we do, and we are lucky enough to connect with some  amazing people to provide a range of specialty services. From housing programs, community development, youth engagement, and programs to prevent and respond to domestic and family violence, we are committed to supporting women, girls and their families to thrive.

2. We provide excellent early childhood education and care to hundreds of children across Canberra

Since establishing in the 1970s, we have continued to provide quality early childhood education and care to the Canberra community. We currently run six early childhood services and school age care programs at 15 locations, as well as providing family day care through our team of incredible educators.

We understand that access to high quality early childhood education and care, and out of school care is crucial to ensuring women are empowered to fully participate in the economy while feeling confident that their children are receiving care and education that fosters their holistic development.

3. We are a registered training organisation

Women’s education is something we take very seriously, so much to the point that we have tailored programs, such as our She Leads programs that specialise in women’s professional develop. In addition to our She Leads Diploma of Leadership and Management, we provide nationally recognised qualifications in early childhood education and care, as well as other courses!

4. We enable change in our community

While our services play a huge part in our organisation, we are also highly active in advocating for gender equality. We connect regularly with other community organisations, stakeholders and decision makers to help raise awareness of affordable housing, women’s homelessness, Prevention of violence against women and more.

Our latest advocacy publications, Action MATTERS, provides a deeper look into the role of advocacy and provides useful information on how to get involved.

5. We strongly support women’s empowerment and leadership

If our mission, “girls and women thriving” is anything to go by, then it’s clear to say we support women’s leadership. We believe women are capable of anything, and to support this, offer a range of programs that empower women’s leadership such as our  She Leads suite of events, Board Trainee program and our Great Ydeas Small Grants program.
