Membership Renewal FAQs

In line with changes to our constitution, which were adopted in May 2018, YWCA Canberra will be moving to a financial year membership from 1 July 2019, with an annual fee period from 1 July – 30 June.

This will help provide consistency around membership status for all members and make the renewal process easier with a once a year membership drive.

No existing member will ‘lose’ membership and we are offering membership grace periods where existing memberships would otherwise be due for renewal prior to July 2019.  No fee will be incurred for this grace period.

If you recently signed up to be a member of YWCA Canberra, your twelve-month membership will be extended until 30 June 2020. The same formula applies for members who are on two-year memberships. Where new members join between January and June of a given year, a 50 per cent discount on memberships will be available.

The above change to the fees affects full memberships only. Concessions and associate memberships will also move to a financial year membership but discounts will not be made available. Members are still welcome to join YWCA Canberra at any time in the year.

Why is this change taking place?

To simplify membership processes and encourage members to renew their memberships, YWCA Canberra’s Constitution (endorsed by members at the EGM on 16 May 2018) was recently amended to state:

9.4 The Annual Fee period will commence on 1 July of each year, and the Annual Fee will be due in advance within 30 days of this date or as otherwise determined by the Directors.

9.5 The Directors may determine that any Member admitted to membership between 1 January and 30 June will pay only one-half of the Annual Fee until the next Annual Fee falls due.

How will this change my membership?

Currently membership renewals are due on the calendar month, one or two years from the end of the month of your join (depending on the chosen length of your membership).

By shifting to a financial year renewal process (1 July – 30 June), all memberships will be scheduled for renewal from 1 July of a given year, and all renewal reminders will take place in the weeks preceding this date.

No member current member will ‘lose’ length in their membership and we are offering grace periods for memberships where existing memberships would otherwise be due for renewal prior to July 2019. For more information on grace periods and discounts, see questions below.

I recently purchased a membership and thought it was going to expire at the end of 2019. Does this mean I will have to pay membership again (in July 2019) before the expected expiry date of my membership?

No. If your membership is due to expire between August and December of 2019, your membership will continue automatically until 30 June 2020. No fee will be incurred for this grace period.

My membership is due to expire in the first half of 2019. Does this mean I will have to pay for two memberships in 2019 (one at the date of my expected expiry and another in July 2019 when the new membership calendar comes into operation)?

No. If your membership is due to expire between January and June of 2019, your membership will continue automatically until 30 June 2019. No fee will be incurred for this grace period.

I recently purchased a two-year membership, which is expected to expire in the second half of 2020. Does this mean I will have to pay membership again (in July 2020) before the expected expiry date of my membership?

No. Members will not ‘lose’ membership. If your two-year membership is due to expire between August and December of 2020, your membership will continue automatically until 30 June 2021. No fee will be incurred for this grace period.

I want to join YWCA Canberra but was going to wait until the start of 2019. Does this mean that I will have to pay a full membership fee for less than 6 months of membership?

The changes made to the constitution allow for those members who join between 1 January and 30 June to pay a half price fee on a full membership. If you join in this period, your membership fee will be $17.50. This will be reflected in changes to the payment options on the YWCA Canberra online membership application form from 1 January.

My membership is due to expire soon, can I still come to events?

Yes. Existing members will not ‘lose’ membership. If you are a current member, and your membership is due to expire before 1 July 2019, a grace period covering the difference between your expected expiry date and the new start date of the membership period will be applied automatically to all memberships.

Are concession memberships affected?

Concessions are currently available to students and those under the age of 18 years, for $15. While concession memberships will also be incorporated into the financial year membership structure, the cost of membership will not be affected. Grace periods for those on existing concession memberships, in line with scenarios outlined above, will be applied.
