17 March 2017
The She Leads College Conference, taking place on Tuesday 21 March, is a one-day event for girls in years 11 and 12, equipping participants with the practical skills and knowledge they need to become confident leaders. This year, we have an amazing line-up of inspiring young women who will share their leadership journeys with participants. We’ll be featuring 5 quick questions with each speaker in the lead up to the Conference. Today, we chat to Alexandra Schumann-Gillett.

Describe yourself in 30 words or less.
I love learning from, and with, others. Being a scientist, I have a keen interest in the transformative potential of increased diversity in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM).
What’s one thing about your life now that you never would have predicted when you were at school?
That I would get to spend a day with Professor Arieh Warshel, his wife and two of my friends. Professor Warshel was a pioneer in my field. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2013.
What is a book or film that has influenced your leadership journey?
The Messenger, by Markus Zusak.
Why are you excited to be part of the She Leads College Conference?
Honestly, I’m excited to be part of most things that support women and leadership!
What piece of advice would you most like to give to young women just starting their leadership journeys?
To get over this feeling of impostor syndrome. That you’re not good enough. That maybe you’re not cut out for it. There’s a line from The Messenger that has stayed with me: “Maybe everyone can live beyond what they’re capable of”. Ordinary people do extraordinary things every day—on a wide range of scales. Don’t let fear or doubt stop you from living beyond what you’re capable of.
