Localjinni – Lakeside Stories – Twilight video walks

Canberra artist, Fiona Hooton received an EY Great Ydeas Creativity Grant in 2018 for her Lakeside Stories Pilot Project. Lakeside Stories is a digital story telling tour taking place on Saturday and Sunday evenings in October. It is a walking tour at Lake Burley Griffin between the Commonwealth and King’s Avenue Bridges that uses urban spaces for creative play.

The EY Great Ydeas Creativity Grant provided a grant of $2,000 to a girl or woman of any age to support a project, artwork, production, or business idea focusing on architecture, dance, visual arts, literature, film production, music, or theatre.

Localjinni is a social enterprise start-up with a cultural, and environmental mission, and brings together years of research and experience interpreting Australian art and culture.

Along with Catrina Vignando, Fiona is collecting ‘Insider stories’ of place and weaving them together to create city experiences that explores how place shapes our thoughts, emotions, and actions.

 They will use these stories of place to connect and motivate audiences to discover and sustain Australia’s cultural and natural resources.

The Contour 556 / 018 Public Art Festival provides an opportunity to trial new approaches to audience engagement, public art and place making.

To create our video walks we are using portable LED projectors and speakers, screening short videos on site after dark. Each clip provides a different perspective on a sense of place.

Walking can be a cultural act; even a political one and its role in how we perceive the world can be profound, because things look different at 4 kms an hour. Inspired in part by the NAIDOC week theme, Because of Her, We Can! we are highlighting how women shape the city.

Women experience public space differently. We have reduced access to it and are not well represented within it. Annabel Crabb notes, that less than 3 per cent of statues in Australia are dedicated to women.

Localjinni wants to make our public spaces more fun, more functional, more of the time. Walking together so we don’t feel out of place, in public space.
