Our YHomes project aims to develop nine units to support women on modest incomes or who have experienced housing insecurity to access secure, affordable housing. Older women are the fastest growing cohort of homelessness in Australia, and as private rental prices continue to soar, we know that an innovative solution is critical to supporting women in their retirement years.
YWCA Canberra is committed to using the land we own in Ainslie to achieve the best impact possible, and as a specialist housing provider, we know that this development will offer a secure and inclusive haven to women in our community.

To whom it may concern,
I am writing to express my support for YWCA Canberra’s Development Application number 202139743 to build supported housing on Block 1, Section 87 in Ainslie.
I believe that YWCA Canberra’s proposal addresses an important need in the community, and will be the best possible use of this land which the organisation owns.
There are currently around 1000 women in Canberra who are at risk of homelessness or already homeless. For many women in this situation, an affordable and safe place to live is all they need to rebuild their lives but finding such a place in Australia’s most expensive city to rent is extremely difficult. This project will change that story for nine women.
YWCA Canberra is a leading not-for-profit with a significant history and expertise in providing housing support for women and their families in Canberra. They are incredibly well placed to deliver the YHomes program, and to ensure that the proposed units meet their intended objectives.
I believe in a Canberra that is inclusive, welcoming and accessible to all. Ensuring that secure, affordable housing is available to the most vulnerable in our community is essential to maintaining these values in our city.
I am confident that YWCA Canberra’s adjusted DA has been developed with the view to meeting the requirements of the Territory Plan, while also delivering high quality, energy efficient, safe and comfortable housing to their target group.
I look forward to seeing this important project come to life.
Kind regards,
