Partnerships that make a difference – LUSH

31 July 2018

At YWCA Canberra, we are fortunate to have built strong partnerships with organisations that support gender equality and women’s leadership. LUSH are a champion of the 2018 She Leads Conference, and we had a chat to Ariahne Thompson to find out just what Lush do and why our partnership is so special.

What does LUSH do?

LUSH was founded by animal and environmental activists and for more than 20 years, has been creating fresh, handmade cosmetics for customers all over the world. The business operates under a series of core values that lead everything we do, these are: 100 per cent vegetarian, ethical buying, fighting animal testing, fresh, handmade and naked (packaging free).

Staying true to its activist roots, LUSH is a campaigning company that is proud to use its business, stores and staff to support groups and causes we truly believe in. For more than 23 years we have been fighting against animal testing, working on preservative-free and packaging free cosmetics. The creativity remains unfettered by industry trends, and thrives on passion, innovation and the excitement of the next invention.

Tell us about yourself and your role at LUSH.

As the Campaign Manager I look after our Charity Pot program, which provides financial donations to grassroots charities working within the areas of animal welfare, environmental protection and human rights. I also develop and execute all of our cause lead campaigns in collaboration with the wider team and our charity partners. I am also lucky enough to collaborate closely with all the fantastic charities and organisations we work with at LUSH.

Achieving gender equality in society means something different to everybody; what does it mean to LUSH?

As a business LUSH recognises its power and influence in amplifying the messages of people of lived experience, as well as the experts leading the way in creating social change. In regards to gender equality we seek to provide visibility to gender fluid and diverse communities and their needs, understanding that people of lived experience will always have the solutions. We also believe in empowering those who identify as women to fight back against discrimination and violence, with a view to inform policy changes.

We believe that every person, regardless of gender has a right to feel safe and to have their voice heard.

Why has LUSH partnered with the She Leads Conference?

We believe it is important to support the development and empowerment of female leaders. Without strong female leaders the needs of those who identify as women will continue to be misrepresented.
