She Leads Diploma – 5 Quick Questions with Lisa Levine

Through the She Leads program, we strive to increase the leadership skills of women in our community. One way we achieve this is through the She Leads Diploma of Leadership and Management, which provides participants with cutting edge education, taught by leading women in their field. In this interview, we talk to Lisa Levine, a facilitator for the Leading Improvement module of the Diploma. 

Lisa Levine is a highly accomplished, experienced and innovative leader. During her career, Lisa has been a Senior Executive in the Australian Public Service and held senior positions within International Private Enterprises such as Hewlett Packard Enterprises. Lisa is well grounded in the leadership of Corporate Services – finance, human resources, information technology, information management, facilities, corporate governance, quality assurance, organisational change, and strategic planning.

Lisa possesses a high level of strategic thinking with a focus on delivering business benefits and value. With over thirty years of experience as a business leader Lisa has delivered highly successful outcomes across organisations. Lisa is able to collaborate and influence within organisations translating Government legislation and policy, missions and strategies into successful business outcomes.

As a versatile leader, change agent and team player, Lisa has highly developed communication skills, commercial awareness and a strong customer focus. Lisa is known for harnessing teams and identifying innovative approaches to achieve maximum performance and support a collaborative, highly effective work culture.

Describe your leadership journey in 30 words or less.

My journey has been one of failures and successes, in the public and private sector. Watching and learning from those I admired and always accepting opportunities to learn and grow.

What was (or is) your biggest leadership challenge?

Believing in myself and my abilities as a leader, to take on new challenges. Having the confidence to do something very different and new, and trusting the advice given by others that see something in you, that you can’t see for yourself.

Having the confidence to say ‘it’s not working for me, I’m going to change that’. I left an employer because my ethics and morals were challenged despite by a different part of the company, despite the fact that I loved the professional services team I led.  It’s having the strength to accept that if you can’t change it from within, perhaps you need to change your own career direction.

Why do we need more women leaders, and what difference can women in leadership make in terms of gender equality?

As a woman in a leadership position, I feel we need more women leaders because we bring a different perspective to the work place, we look at problems, issues and the norm from a different perspective. Sometimes its nurturing, caring and being empathetic to those around us.

What book should every aspiring woman leader read?

I don’t think that any book is a silver bullet and I tend not to read any more, perhaps a reflection of being time poor. I find that I need to be more specific in what I’m looking for, so I use the power of the internet, Ted Talks and articles about topics of interest otherwise I find that I can lost track of what I’m trying to achieve.
