At YWCA Canberra, we’re really proud of the vibrancy and diversity of our staff team. We’ll be bringing you regular staff snapshots so you can meet our team and find out a bit more about the people behind our programs and services. Today, meet Liam, School Age Care Program Manager at Yarralumla Primary School.
Tell us about your role at YWCA Canberra?
My role at YWCA Canberra is to run the School Age Care program at Yarralumla Primary School. I am currently the Program Manager there, and the Program Manager of O’Connor School Age Care in the mornings.
What’s on your playlist?
Nothing but bangers on my playlist. I enjoy listening to EDM (Electric Dance Music), but I also enjoy many other genres. Deadmau5 would have to be my number one pick to listen to.
What is the most ‘out-there’ job you’ve ever had?
I have only ever had three jobs including this one! So I’ll let you be the judge on which one is more out there; a School Age Care Program Manager or working at a grocery store! Haha!
What are you reading at the moment?
The book I want to start reading, but haven’t quite started yet is Porcelain by Moby.
When you’re not at work, what’s your relaxation activity of choice?
My choice of relaxation would have to be driving to new places while listening to my favourite tunes.
What is the scariest thing you’ve done in the past year?
Become a Program Manager of a School Age Care centre!
What’s an achievement that you’re proud of?
Becoming the Program Manager of a School Age Care centre! Also, when I finish my Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care next year I will be super stoked!
How do you like to unwind?
The best thing I do to unwind is spend time with my dog, it’s a nice distraction and calms me down.
Who inspires you?
My biggest inspiration are my parents, they are both hard working people and have managed to raise both my brother and myself.
People would be surprised if they knew…
How young I am! I am always mistaken for being older then I actually am.
What’s the best concert that you’ve ever been to?
Having backstage passes to Splendour in The Grass, and watching my best friend perform there was pretty incredible. I will never forget that experience.
What’s on your bucket list?
To see the world, and to experience everything it has to offer.
What’s your favourite movie quote?
“Why so serious?” – The Joker (The Dark Knight)
If you got a free around the world ticket, where would you go?
I would go around the world! It’s free, so why not?!
Who is your celebrity doppelganger?
I get Ed Sheeran a lot, but also the guy who plays Ron Weasley in Harry Potter.
Who is your feminist hero?
Oprah Winfrey is a strong idol for all young people to look up to.
What makes you proud to work at the Y?
What makes me proud to work at the Y is the response we get from the families and children we provide care for. They are super supportive of our role, and how far we go to make sure we can provide the best care for their children. What also makes me proud is the opportunity the Y gives people like me to extend my comfort zone and challenge myself. It has made me become more aware of my responsibilities.
