At YWCA Canberra, we’re really proud of the vibrancy and diversity of our staff team. We’ll be bringing you regular staff snapshots so you can meet our team and find out a bit more about the people behind our programs and services. Today, meet Tea Karacic.
Tell us about your role at YWCA Canberra.
I’m the Human Resources officer at YWCA Canberra. My day to day is mostly reporting and following up on injuries, dealing with the hiring process, and sending a billion emails reminding people about forms and processes. There’s other, more interesting and challenging stuff, but it’s fairly variable and pops up semi unexpectedly.
What’s on your playlist?
I’ve been listening to Placebo’s back catalogue a lot since seeing them at the AIS in September. Triple J is always on in the car, and ABC Jazz at home.
What is the most ‘out-there’ job you’ve ever had?
I used to work at a geochemical analysis plant that ran 24/7 on the graveyard shift. My night would start with weighing samples, before adding reagents and putting them through various chemical processes.
What are you reading at the moment?
I’ve always got a Terry Pratchett on the go to try and keep my brain happy. At the moment it’s Pyramids.
When you’re not at work, what’s your relaxation activity of choice?
I play roller derby, so when I’m not at work, I’m either skating, training, or doing derby admin. Scrimmage is probably the best stress management activity of them all. I read a lot too.
What is the scariest thing you’ve done in the past year?
Purchased tickets for international travel! No backing out now, yikes.
How do you like to unwind?
Alone with a book and cats. I’m fairly introverted, but work and my hobby of choice are fairly social, so when I have a moment to myself, I like to hide in a comfy corner with a book, and a kitty when available.
People would be surprised if they knew…
I tried to learn to surf when I was in high school, spent three days at Cronulla getting beaten up by the elements. Actually, I think a lot of people who know me would be surprised to know that I went out side, let alone on a sunny day.
What makes you proud to work at the Y?
It’s such an amazing organisation with an extensive history of supporting women and communities. I’ve also found that the culture within the organisation is awesome, there is so much support and opportunity for growth.
