At YWCA Canberra, we’re really proud of the vibrancy and diversity of our staff team. We’ll be bringing you regular Staff Snapshots so you can meet our team and find out a bit more about the people behind our programs and services. Today, meet Vicki Green, Administration Officer.
Can you tell us a bit about your role at YWCA Canberra?
I first started working with the Y on a part-time basis in 2009, working in the growing Training Unit as the Administration Coordinator, working and meeting a diverse range of driven colleagues and clients. The remainder of my working week was spend at my very different career of hairdressing. In 2011 I became a full time employee of YWCA Canberra, with an additional position as a Child Care Accounts Officer. This position allowed me to discover the world of finance within Children’s Services. During 2013 I transitioned to the Finance Department for six months to help out. This was very different and a great learning experience for me. I also co-ordinate the ENCORE program which is a very fulfilling role. My weeks are very varied which I love!
What is the scariest thing you’ve done in the past year?
This year I turned 50 and it was a goal of mine to run a half-marathon – not really scary but definitely a nervous and anxious time leading up to the big day. Thank fully, I made it and was first in my age category.
What’s on your current playlist?
Currently on my playlist I enjoy Angus and Julia Stone, Ed Sheeran, Vance Joy and Bruno Mars.
What is the most out-there job you’ve ever had?
When I was newly married and only 21, my husband and I spent two years travelling around Australia working in Shearing Sheds. I was a Roustabout, which was great for fitness, but I also had to cook for 20 to 30 men as a Shearers’ cook. A big challenge for me at that age, especially with very little cooking experience – definitely character building!
If you had to choose a single thing about the Y that makes you proud to work here, what would it be?
During my years at the Y I have met many varied and inspirational women – it has been a pleasure to share the growth of women in the workforce.
When you’re not at work, what’s your relaxation activity of choice?
I love being outdoors so gardening and long distance running are my favourite pastimes.
Who’s your favourite inspirational woman?
Turia Pitt – this woman is amazing and an inspiration to all mankind. I follow her on Instagram and she astounds me!
