On Friday 8 July, For Purpose will hold a Strategic and Business Planning Bootcamp for not-for-profit professionals here at YWCA Canberra. We caught up with Tim Arnold, facilitator and business coach, to find out what it’s all about, and why you should attend.
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m a career administrator in the sports industry. Being able to work on strategy and planning is what gets me out of bed most mornings. I’m a very social golfer, red wine lover, cricket fan and volunteer for the Children’s Medical Research Institute.
What do you love about being a business advisor and coach?
Helping to set clients on a path that’s going to get them where they want to go. Most of the clients I work with have all the answers they need, they’re just not sure how to unlock the success or how to communicate their vision to the people they want to follow them. Planning and business improvement is a process that takes time –it’s rewarding to help a client or organisation to define a strategy and then execute it.
Why is it important for people working in the not-for-profit or for purpose sector to skill up in strategic and business planning?
A good plan is a roadmap to a better future. The not-for-profit and for purpose sector has limited resources so it’s important that we concentrate effort and energy on the things that are critical to yielding the best result. Without a plan we can spread ourselves too thin and the impact is diluted. A good plan is also a great way to engage and unite our stakeholders and communicate the vision.
What is the hardest thing about planning?
Dedicating the right amount of time to planning. Some times we can’t find enough time and other times we over plan things and never actually get anything done. When you do dedicate the time to planning it’s important to know how you can maximise the result and effort to be able to set a course for the future.
What can people expect when they attend your Bootcamp?
A practical session where you’ll walk away with the tools and resource to be able to facilitate an effective planning process. Attendees will also learn how to bring their plan to life so it’s not just something that sits on the shelf collecting dust.
