Support for people impacted by the ACT COVID-19 lockdown

19 August 2021

If you’ve lost income due to the ACT COVID-19 outbreak, or need urgent access to food and essential items, government support is available.

We would like to thank ACTCOSS for providing this summary of current ACT and Commonwealth Government programs. Please note that there may be additional supports available depending on your particular situation. YWCA Canberra is continuing to support vulnerable Canberrans through our housing programs and our Lanyon Food Hub.

If you have lost work

If you have lost eight or more hours of work due to the ACT COVID-19 lockdown, you might be eligible for the COVID-19 Disaster Payment. This Commonwealth Government payment is administered through Services Australia.

This is a lump-sum payment of:

  • $750 per week if you have lost 20 or more hours of work that week
  • $450 per week if you have lost eight or more but less than 20 hours of work that week
  • an additional $200 if you are currently receiving an income support payment and have lost eight hours or more of work.

Eligibility criteria apply. Applications will be open from 20 August and will be paid in arrears.

If you have had to isolate while waiting for a COVID-19 test result

If you couldn’t work due to having to isolate while awaiting a COVID 19 test result, you might be eligible for an ACT Government payment of $270. The COVID-19 Test Hardship Isolation Payment covers up to three days in isolation. Eligibility criteria apply. You can apply for this payment online.

If you have COVID-19, are a close contact, or have to care for someone with COVID-19

If you can’t earn an income because you have COVID-19, are a close contact, or are caring for someone with COVID-19, and you do not have access to sick or personal leave entitlements, you may be eligible for the Pandemic Leave Disaster Payment. This Commonwealth Government payment is administered through Services Australia.

This is a $1,500 payment for each 14-day period you’ve been told to self-isolate or quarantine, or are caring for someone who has COVID-19.

Eligibility criteria apply. You can apply by calling Services Australia or completing the claim form.

If you need food or essential items

The ACT Government has partnered with the Community Info Hub through Volunteering ACT and the ACT Emergency Services Agency to urgently provide access to food and essential items for vulnerable Canberrans.

Any Canberran significantly and adversely impacted by this lockdown can call Volunteering ACT on 1800 43 11 33 between 9am and 5pm daily.

Callers will be linked with Volunteering ACT, who will place a shopping order on their behalf. Members of the ACT ESA will then collect their order and deliver it to them.
