A-Z celebrates Wear it Purple Day

2 September 2020

At YWCA Canberra, we are all about inclusion, diversity and embracing your own identity. On Tuesday 1 September, the YWCA Canberra Youth Programs A-Z group came together to celebrate Wear it Purple Day. At this event, our youth engagement team invited 20 young people from all over the Tuggeranong region and surrounds to celebrate being their true authentic selves.

Wear it Purple Day is about showing young LGBTQIA+ people that they have the right to be who they are. Statistics show that 75 per cent of young LGBTQIA+ people are bullied due to their identity. It is important to ensure we are creating safe spaces for young people so they feel accepted and supported.

A-Z provides a safe, non-judgmental space for gender and sexuality diverse young people who want to meet new friends and hang out. It offers an opportunity for young people to learn, participate in relevant events, and hear from guest speakers.

A-Z is a social group and a safe space. Although allies are welcome to support their friends at A-Z meetings, young people are encouraged to make new friends through the meetings.

A-Z runs on Tuesday evenings during school term from 5pm to 7pm at the Mura Lanyon Youth and Community Centre.
