The YWCA Canberra Youth Engagement Team have hit the ground running this year by re-launching their face-to-face programming with the A-Z group last week. The young people were eager to meet up again after a busy break, arriving two hours early to greet our amazing YWCA Canberra Youth Engagement Team. The team, doing what they did best, hosted a fun-filled afternoon jam-packed with activities to engage the young people with at the Lanyon Youth Centre. COVID-19 measures were safety put into place, with all the young people happily complying and masking up to keep each other safe!
It was phenomenal to see all the young people again and to hear their experiences of their first two days of school. The young people reflected on their experiences taking COVID tests and adjusting to a new way of learning. Some had transitioned from high school to college! It was great to hear that the shift was easier than expected!
The YWCA Canberra Youth Team were also ecstatic to have the Teen Clinic join them last week alongside the Thursday Drop In. Teen Clinic is a free service that provides local teenagers with the opportunity to talk to one of our nurses about a range of issues in a non-judgmental environment. The nurses are there to help advise young people on both medical and non-medical issues allowing them to make educated, healthy choices.
Young people introduced themselves to Sandy and Megan, the friendly Nurses from Directions running Teen Clinic.
With 26 young people through the door, the youth team will be extending face to face engagements, with Wednesday’s opening next week from 3pm – 6pm in the Lanyon Youth Centre.
Tuesday’s 3pm-7pm:
A-Z provides a safe, non-judgmental space for gender and sexuality diverse young people who want to meet new friends and hang out. It offers an opportunity for young people to learn, participate in relevant events, and hear from guest speakers. Young participants will be encouraged to suggest speakers and topics.
A-Z is primarily a social group and is a safe space. Although allies are welcome to support their friends at A-Z meetings, young people are encouraged to make new friends through the meetings.
Wednesday’s & Thursday’s 3.00pm – 6.00pm:
YWCA Canberra’s Clubhouse is a free, out of school learning space that provides over 400 young people, aged 10 to 18 in the Tuggeranong region with access to the latest technology, as well as mentoring and support to grow their skills in science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics, and music.
