[Canberra, 18 April 2024] – YWCA Canberra proudly announces the recipients of the Great Ydeas Small Grant Awards, a testament to innovation and empowerment in supporting women’s causes. Four remarkable women this year have been honoured for their visionary ideas aimed at advancing the rights and opportunities of women in our community. The awards ceremony, held on 18 April at YWCA Canberra, was graced by the esteemed presence of Elizabeth Lee MLA, Deputy Leader of the Canberra Liberals, Attorney General of the ACT, Shane Rattenbury and Rebecca Vassarotti, Deputy Leader of the Canberra Greens, who joined in celebrating these inspiring initiatives.
The Great Ydeas Small Grant Awards have been an integral part of YWCA Canberra’s commitment to fostering creativity and initiative in addressing issues affecting women. Project Chosen Family: Empowering Culturally and Racially Marginalised Female-Identifying Youths in Canberra
Led by Lew Ching Yip, Project Chosen Family stands as a vital support group for Culturally and Racially Marginalized (CARM) female-identifying youths aged 18 to 25 in Canberra. Addressing the needs of those estranged from their families or facing challenging familial relationships, this initiative provides early intervention, education, and a confidential space for peer support. Project Chosen Family aligns with the broader mission to combat gender-based violence against women in Canberra, fostering safety and empowerment for marginalized individuals.
Dr Chloe Lim and CALD Voices in STEM Podcast: Amplifying Diverse Perspectives in Science and Innovation
Dr Chloe Lim introduces CALD Voices in STEM podcast, an initiative aimed at amplifying the voices of culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) women in STEM fields. This groundbreaking podcast seeks to showcase the diverse experiences, contributions, and perspectives of CALD women, fostering inclusivity and inspiring the next generation of diverse scientists and innovators.
Megan Tennant and Girls for the Environment: Empowering Environmental Champions of Tomorrow
Megan Tennant’s Girls for the Environment initiative empowers young girls, women, and non-binary individuals with the skills to become environmental champions within their schools. Through engaging workshop sessions, participants develop essential skills in project planning, leadership, and environmental awareness, leading to the implementation of sustainability initiatives. This project ensures a lasting impact on environmental stewardship and community support.
Emma English and Student Scholarship for Singing Lessons: Empowering Confidence Through Music Education
Emma English’s Student Scholarship for Singing Lessons project aims to offer financial assistance to primary school-aged girls who aspire to learn singing but face financial constraints. By providing access to singing lessons, this initiative empowers girls with confidence and skills to tackle challenges as they grow. Emma continually enhances her teaching methods to ensure the best possible education for aspiring young singers.
