Dame Annette King, one of New Zealand’s longest serving politicians and now NZ High Commissioner to Australia, will appear at a special in-conversation event on Tuesday 24 November, hosted by YWCA Canberra at Kambri, ANU.
Former member of the New Zealand Labour Party, Dame Annette King served as a member of Parliament for over 20 years from 1984, where she as infamously dubbed by then-Prime Minister, Rob Muldoon, “The horror from Horowhenua”, a prime example of the disdain faced by women politicians at the time.
Over the past decades, Dame King has shown that the challenges and barriers to strong women leaders are no match for her integrity, strength and capabilities as a politician.
Now living in Canberra, Dame King will join Hannah Birdsey (Assistant Secretary of Governance, Fragility and Water Branch at DFAT) for a special in-conversation event as part of YWCA Canberra’s She Leads program.
In this intimate and empowering conversation, attendees will have the opportunity to hear from two incredible women on their experiences of and journeys to leadership, and their advice for aspiring women leaders today.
YWCA Canberra has been delivering the She Leads program for the past five years, connecting the local community to inspiring women leaders through in-conversations, workshops and conferences.
“With COVID-19 restrictions finally allowing for safe in-person events to recommence, we’re excited to be able to close the year with this exceptional line-up,” YWCA Canberra CEO, Frances Crimmins said.
“Dame Annette King is truly inspirational, and this opportunity to learn from her experiences as a woman leader who came of age during a truly challenging time for gender equality is unbeatable.” Places are limited. Ticket price is $45, and includes drinks and canapés and networking opportunities.
